Women Arent As Cool With One-Night Stands As Men

Lets start with one thing..Just like every study ever conducted, just because this doesnt apply to YOU doesnt mean it doesnt apply.

My Boyfriend Is Turned Off By My Hairy Legs.

Im 25 and have been dating a man who is 34 for the last 1.5 years. There is a lot to like about him he's smart, kind, caring, and dependable. He is almost the elusive alpha male nerd.

Am I Being Too Materialistic By Giving Up on a Financially Unstable Man?

I decided to get back into the dating world and I met this guy online four weeks ago. So its all still very early and very new. But a big worry for me is that is has absolutely no stability or consistency in his life.

When Do I Draw The Line When He Parties With the Boys?

My boyfriend loves partying weekends and some weeknights with his friends. We are in our late 20s and I party a bit too but dont consider it extremely important.

13 Questions to Ask Before Getting Married

13 Questions to Ask Before Getting Married

“All the News That’s Fit to Print” has been the New York Times’ motto since 1896. Because it’s so vast and comprehensive, it has also been my main news source since I became an adult. I think that’s evidenced in the number of Thursday posts that link to NYT articles about dating, relationships, sex, marriage and love.

The latest worthwhile share is something you’re going to want to absorb and share as well: 13 Questions to Ask Before Getting Married. As you know if you’re a regular reader, it’s not “What’s your preferred diet and workout schedule?” These are questions written by people who study compatibility and know what REALLY determine the success of your marriage.

I’m going to list the 13 questions here, but I encourage you to check out the original piece as well.

  1. Did your family throw plates, calmly discuss issues, or silently shut down when disagreements arose? The answer is B: Calmly discuss issues.
  2. Will we have children, and if we do, will you change diapers? As I’ve quoted from a previous NYT piece – the best predictor of a happy marriage is a man who helps out with housework and childrearing.
  3. Will our experiences with our exes help or hinder us? There’s a reason people talk about having baggage that can fit in an overhead compartment. Bringing too much of it to your marriage can be an unbearable weight.
  4. How important is religion? How will we celebrate religious holidays, if at all? Religion is as big a deal as two people make it. While it’s certainly easier if two people believe the same things, the more flexible you are about religion, the easier it is to find yourself a partner.
  5. Is my debt your debt? Would you be willing to bail me out? My wife came with $40K of debt. I didn’t pay it off, but I paid for everything while she was digging out of her own hole. I think that’s a pretty good template to follow.
  6. What’s the most you would be willing to spend on a car, a couch, or shoes? When they talk about money being an issue in marriage, this is what they’re talking about. It’s not just about making money, it’s about the values implicit in how you spend or save it? You gotta be on (or near) the same page.
  7. Can you deal with my doing things without you? While my wife is my favorite person on earth, I think it’s important to have separate friends and interests? Those who think that being married means being joined at the hip are often disappointed by those who don’t.
  8. Do we like each other’s parents? This matters a lot more if you’re young, if you live near the parents, and if you don’t have healthy boundaries with your parents. While it’s helpful to like each others’ parents, it’s more helpful to know that the married couple’s wishes come before the family’s wishes – in my opinion.
  9. How important is sex to you? If you’re going to have sex with one person for the rest of your life, you better find a compatible partner. The tricky part is that sex – more than most things – is a moving target. How you feel sexually has a lot to do with health, age, timing and hormones – which is to say that how you feel when you get married is often considerably different than how you feel in 10 or 20 years.
  10. How far should we take flirting with other people? Is watching pornography okay? Enough battles have been fought in this space over this issue, but I will continue to take a strong stand and say that with confident people, non-sexual flirting (without intent on taking action) is perfectly okay, as is occasional (non-addictive, non interactive) pornography use. Taking a hard line on this really decreases the number of available partners for you.
  11. Do you know all the ways I say “I love you”? People give and receive love differently, as best outlined in Dr. Gary Chapman’s 5 Love Languages. Knowing how to communicate your needs and deliver on someone else’s is paramount to a healthy marriage.
  12. What do you admire about me, and what are your pet peeves? Positive affirmation is necessary in any partnership, but as I teach in my Love U course, so is humility. Just having the willingness to know how you’re perceived and admit (and laugh at) your flaws is a complete relationship-saver.
  13. How do you see us 10 years from now? As I’ve said a million times, if you are a woman who wants to get married, stick with men who openly want to get married. If you are a woman who wants kids, stick with men who openly wants kids. You shouldn’t have to guess where he stands.

Your thoughts, below, are greatly appreciated.

How Can I Get My Boyfriend to Understand I Love Him But Don’t Always Want to Have Sex?

How Can I Get My Boyfriend to Understand I Love Him But Don’t Always Want to Have Sex

I have been dating my boyfriend for almost 3 years. I’m 28 and he’s 26. We’re moving in together next month, will be living together for a year, and then I’ll be sent away to serve as a medical professional in the Navy. I have concerns about not being able to fulfill his sexual appetite now, and more so when I’m away.

In these past 3 years we have seen each other consistently about 3-5 days a week, and we live close to each other. There are only a handful of times I can remember where we got together and didn’t have sex. However, I feel like our sex drives are completely out of sync. He wants to have sex or have me satisfy him every time we see each other, and I just can’t seem to keep up with him and get in the mood myself. Regardless, I please him almost every time we see each other to keep him satisfied, but it can be difficult after my longer days of work. I’m completely exhausted and on top of that I feel the pressure to satisfy him. I never fake sex or pleasure, and there are times where he is disappointed that I’m just not into it. He makes me feel bad that I couldn’t at least pretend to enjoy it.

I finally worked up the guts to have what I felt was an awkward conversation about our sex life about 6 months ago. I explained that I find him so attractive, and that I think we have a great sex life, but that we have different sex drives and it’s tough for me to get in the mood at times. I also told him that it feels like the focus of our relationship is sex and not so much the things that are important to me, which is another reason I may not be as aroused. We agreed that I’ll be more open with him, and let him know when I’m not in the mood, and he’s going to try harder to fulfill my needs.

Since then he has romanced me a little more, which has resulted in a little more passion from me, but I’m still feeling the mismatch when it comes to sex. I’ve been more vocal telling him when I’m tired. So now instead of cutting to the chase, he’ll ask me if I mind if he touches himself, and I respond of course not. Then he’ll ask if he can touch me, and again I have no problem with that. This always leads to him asking if I could touch him, and it’s as if he either forgot or didn’t care that I just said I was tired. I don’t want to reject his request so I do, but I’m completely annoyed that he just doesn’t understand.

I genuinely feel that he loves me and values having me in his life, and he talks about our future all the time. But I’ve been close to tears in frustration feeling like my main purpose is to keep him sexually satisfied, and that it’s the only reason why he makes the effort to spend time with me. Well… I know that’s the main reason any guy puts effort into seeing their girl, but is it too much to ask that we spend the day together and he doesn’t try anything at the end? I don’t want to beat a dead horse by continuing to have these conversations with him, but I also don’t think he really understands what I’m feeling.

I badly want to keep him happy, but I feel like I’m not going to be enough for him if we tone things down, especially when I leave for the Navy and only see each other a couple times a month. What can be a happy compromise for both of us?

Ashley

I don’t like the way this sounds, Ashley.

This is not to suggest that he’s a bad guy, per se, only to acknowledge what you wrote yourself:
“I’m still feeling the mismatch when it comes to sex.”

And, like I’ve written on many occasions, anything that you choose to be a dealbreaker is a dealbreaker.

For some people, it’s religion. For others, it’s money. For others, it’s height.

Neither of you really wants to make the “happy compromise” that it will take to make your relationship work.

For you, it may be incompatible sex drives.

Listen, it sounds like you’re mature for your age, and you’re handling this about as well as you can. You’ve voiced your feelings. He heard you and made a sort of attempt to appease you. But he wants what he wants. You want what you want. And neither of you really wants to make the “happy compromise” that it will take to make your relationship work. You each want the other person to compromise on your behalf. That’s not terribly surprising, but if you can’t agree on a mutually agreeable solution, there’s nothing that you can really do to salvage things.

Sorry if that sounds like a gloomy diagnosis – I know I’m working off limited information. But if I’m a guy with a high sex drive, who can’t really accept no for an answer, and then my girlfriend is leaving for a military tour of duty? I’m probably not content with that solution. I’m turning to porn first and eventually either insisting that you move back home, looking for another sexual outlet, or breaking up with you. Even if I’m wrong about all of the above, you’re still stuck in the same place – a stalemate between your needs and his needs.

Rest assured that most men’s desires taper off to a more reasonable level over time.

I’m more like you and I’m sympathetic to your more moderate drive, but unless

a. You can keep up this every-night performance for the rest of your life or…
b. He can take no for an answer sometimes, and be content with his own hand from time to time…

You’re facing a serious incompatibility problem, no different than when one person wants kids and the other doesn’t. I would have a very serious problem-solving heart-to-heart with him and openly discuss the possible points of compromise.

If they can’t be bridged, you can rest assured that most men’s desires taper off to a more reasonable level over time. Good luck.

Why He Disappeared (The Dr. Ali Binazir Version)

Why He Disappeared (The Dr. Ali Binazir Version)

In 2008, I had a business coach who had just been through a painful break-up.

“If you write a book, explaining why men disappear,” she said, “You’re going to be rich and famous.”

Two years later, I released “Why He Disappeared – the Smart, Strong, Successful Woman’s Guide to Understanding Men and Keeping the Right One Hooked Forever.”

Around the same time, a friend of mine in LA was busy writing his own insightful tract on understanding men. His name is Dr. Ali Binazir and the name of that book is “The Tao of Dating – The Smart Woman’s Guide to Being Absolutely Irresistible.”

As I wrote on my Writing page (where I recommend quality dating/relationship books) about The Tao of Dating:

Dr. Ali Binazir uses his deep knowledge of the mind and Eastern philosophy to create a must-read manifesto for smart, strong, successful women. It’s brainy stuff, but it’s a worthwhile venture. I devoured this book in one night and since Ali and I agree on 95% of our material, I can give you an enthusiastic endorsement.

In other words, I’m a big fan of the good doctor. He’s smart. He’s funny. And he’s a really great writer. There are few people whose skills I envy. He is one of them.

His latest piece was published on Medium and is called The 9 Reasons Why Men Lose Interest and What You Can Do About It.

Give yourself 22 minutes to read it (yeah, it’s that long) and then come back and let me know what you think. I agree with almost everything he says.

It’s the curse of the nice girl. You fall in love. He seems great. Slowly, but surely, his mask slips and you see his true colors: he’s selfish, stubborn, temperamental, critical and mean. In this Love U Podcast, I’m going to help you enforce healthy boundaries from the very beginning so that you’re nobody’s doormat ever again.

At 40, Is It Too Late to Change My Behavior and Get Better At Compromise?

At 40, Is It Too Late to Change My Behavior and Get Better At Compromise

Hi Evan, I am 39 year old female who finally realized a couple of years ago that I was attracting the wrong kind of men. I did a lot of internal work, including therapy, to change. I’m happy to say that last year I finally met a wonderful man and we’ve been together several months. The problem is that we’re both stubborn and sensitive, and want things our way. Part of our problem is the result of being single and living alone for many years. I know that I am part of the problem. I KNOW that I should compromise, but when something happens that drives me crazy, I can’t seem to choose different behavior. I am worried that two type-A 40-somethings won’t be able to make the necessary adjustments to make the relationship work. Please tell me how to get better at compromise. I’d rather choose the relationship over being alone and having everything my way forever.

Jennifer

This is a fascinating and loaded question. I’m happy for you that you’ve done some internal work and that you’re attempting to change. That’s the good news and you should be applauded for it.

Here’s the bad news:

You still – from my perspective – have a number of blind spots that are getting in the way of your happiness.

It’s a popular theory, to be sure, but men are not magnets, drawn to you against your will and theirs. We are human beings. We make choices. You may be attracted to the wrong men. You may have chosen the wrong men. But you did not unknowingly “attract” the wrong men to you.

2. You can only change your personality so much.

You’re stubborn. You’re sensitive. You want things your way. I get it. I have some of those traits myself, and I will be the first to own that this makes me a “difficult” person, in general. The problem is that no amount of therapy is going to change your stripes. Therapy doesn’t turn introverts into extroverts or mean people into nice people. All therapy can do is work around the edges and nudge you in a healthier direction. This is a MAJOR plank in my coaching platform, namely that…

Marriage is about balance. It’s about puzzle pieces neatly fitting together. It’s not a constant struggle or fight for power or compromise.

3. It’s much easier to change your choice of men than it is to change yourself.

I am a Type-A opinionated go-getter. I am attracted to Type-A opinionated go-getters. I coach Type-A opinionated go-getters. I am married to an easygoing, happy, flexible woman who doesn’t see me as overly difficult. We get along on 95% of issues and easily find ways to compromise on the 5%. Which brings me to the interesting fourth point.

4. You are more likely to soften and compromise with a softer and more compromising mate.

I may have some of the traits of the typical alpha male, but my wife is so amazing that 8 years into our marriage, I’ve largely turned into the “Yes, dear” guy. Why? Because it works. Happy wife, happy life. My wife makes things so pleasurable for me that it’s ultimately easy to give her exactly what she wants. In other words, her attitude is what makes me want to be a better (read: more flexible and generous) husband.

When you compromise, you WIN, because you get to maintain a happy relationship.

Presuming that what you wrote is true, it sounds to me like you and your boyfriend are both highly opinionated, stubborn, pain-in-the-asses who really love each other and want to make things work.

I respect that, but, as an objective third party, I can’t say that I’d advocate for such a marriage.

Marriage is about balance. It’s about puzzle pieces neatly fitting together. It’s not a constant struggle or fight for power or compromise. To be fair, many relationships ARE like this – two challenging people constantly struggling for the upper hand – but they are not the kind of marriages I try to help clients cultivate.

I’m not telling you to break up with your boyfriend, Jennifer. I am telling you, however, that, in my experience, it’s much easier to find an easier guy who naturally lets you have your way than it is to battle it out with another difficult, sensitive soul who is stuck in his ways.

But if you want to learn to compromise, there’s only one thing to know:

When you compromise, you WIN, because you get to maintain a happy relationship. When you refuse to compromise, you lose, because you put your desires over your partners’ desires. This reinforces the message that your needs are more important than his – a stance which should rightfully kill any relationship.

If you want to learn how to choose a healthy, complementary partner for a long-term relationship where compromise is EASY, please click here to learn more.
