My Boyfriend Is Turned Off By My Hairy Legs.
Im 25 and have been dating a man who is 34 for the last 1.5 years. There is a lot to like about him he's smart, kind, caring, and dependable. He is almost the elusive alpha male nerd.
Am I Being Too Materialistic By Giving Up on a Financially Unstable Man?
I decided to get back into the dating world and I met this guy online four weeks ago. So its all still very early and very new. But a big worry for me is that is has absolutely no stability or consistency in his life.
When Do I Draw The Line When He Parties With the Boys?
My boyfriend loves partying weekends and some weeknights with his friends. We are in our late 20s and I party a bit too but dont consider it extremely important.

Couples That Date Longer Stay Married Longer
If you saw a man in a bar, slept with him that night, got married four months later, and are still together thirty years later, good for you.
This is a wonderful story and proof that a broken clock is right twice a day.
It’s important to say this up front because, somehow, folks seem to take great offense whenever they’re told that their way of finding love is somehow suboptimal. You shouldn’t. No one is judging you.
I just find it far more important to share facts than feelings. You may FEEL that you should “just know” when you’ve met your “soulmate” and when you have that feeling, you should both just lock it in as quickly as possible. That’s fair – and hey, every once in awhile it works. Alas, most of the time, it doesn’t, according to this study by Randy Olson, which looks at certain factors in how long marriages last:
Spending a ton of money on your wedding will not CAUSE you to break up, but it happens to correlate with higher divorce rates.
The charts on the linked page talk about correlation, not causation, which is an important distinction. In other words, spending a ton of money on your wedding will not CAUSE you to break up, but it happens to correlate with higher divorce rates.
To me, the most salient data points on those graphs state the following:
The more money a couple makes, the less likely they are to divorce.
Again, this is correlation, not causation. But it makes perfect sense. People with more education are more likely to get married, to use birth control, to delay marriage, to come from functional families, and to make more money. Couples who make over $125K are 51% less likely to divorce than couples making less than $25K.
The more people a couple has at the wedding, the less likely they are to divorce.
Makes sense. Couples that elope, run off to Vegas, or choose not to include family are often doing so in the heat of passion, without parental blessing. It’s not a huge shock when these relationships don’t work out. (And yes, I know there are second marriages where the couple decides not to make a big deal about the wedding. Just know that these marriages fail two-thirds of the time also!)
The longer a couple dates before a proposal, the less likely they are to divorce.
Life is a marathon and slow and steady wins the race.
Not remotely surprising, but surprisingly controversial to people who don’t want to believe this. Couples that date for less than one year have the highest divorce rate. Couples that wait 3 years before getting engaged have a 39% lower divorce rate. In essence, if you spend three years dating before you tie the knot, you are much more likely to discover whether you are long-term compatible than a couple that falls in love, ties the knot, and tries to figure it out AFTER the wedding.
This is IMPORTANT news for both women in their 30’s who are feeling the pressure of time and women in their 50’s who feel like they have less time and more maturity so they should just KNOW better.
Uh uh. Life is a marathon and slow and steady wins the race.
Your thoughts, below, are appreciated.

Will Another 6 Months Make My Boyfriend Want Marriage and Kids?
Hi Evan,
I am currently in a 2.5 year relationship, (I’m 30 and he’s 38). We have lived together over 1.5 years, and have an amazing dog together whom we both cherish. We get along pretty well and I can honestly say we have a complementary and solid relationship. However, at times when we do argue, it’s over the issue of marriage and kids. I’ve read most of your blogs surrounding this issue, but none seem to address what to do when your boyfriend “doesn’t know if he ever wants marriage or kids.”
We have been attending couple’s therapy for the last six months and he still ‘doesn’t know.’ He has said comments such as: “I want a companion but I don’t want the responsibilities of companionship,” or “I want to be me and I don’t want to put in extra effort or work. I work 100 hours a week” or “Relationships should just flow and be easy. There shouldn’t be compromises or sacrifices.”
This scared me and I realized hey, this guy probably wants a “forever girlfriend.” My dilemma is I love this man very much and want to spend my life with him, however due to feeling insecure about the direction of our relationship, I am contemplating whether to stay and “give him more time to decide” or walk away (in hopes that he’ll miss me if I’m not here). I know you’ve mentioned in another blog “At the 3-year mark, there’s literally no new info that your boyfriend is trying to gather…” and I agree. Should I give this man another 6 months to decide, or just walk away and find someone who knows what he wants?
Thanks for your help
-Nancy
Sorry to hear your story, Nancy. But this doesn’t look good.
Two questions:
2. At what point in the relationship did you learn that your boyfriend didn’t want to get married and have children?
Unless he blatantly lied to you and walked back his words, I’m guessing the answers are:
2. From the very beginning
Which means, unfortunately, that you put yourself in this position. You ignored the bright red flags that he waved in your face and insisted on dating him – and thereby put yourself in the position of the “forever girlfriend.”
I know many stories just like yours, including some close friends and family members who stayed with women for 5-9 years without ever getting engaged. I’ve privately told those men to break up with their girlfriends. Their responses? “Why should I? I LIKE being in this relationship. If SHE doesn’t want to be in this relationship, she should dump ME!”
Instead of trying to force this guy to do something he clearly doesn’t want to do – six months of therapy against his will? Blech! – how about you take back your power and tell him the truth?
I think it lacks integrity, to tell the truth, but I’ve always said that you’re not responsible for someone else’s behavior, only your own.
So instead of trying to force this guy to do something he clearly doesn’t want to do – six months of therapy against his will? Blech! – how about you take back your power and tell him the truth?
You love him. You wish he wanted the same thing out of life that you did. But you’re not going to force a man to marry you at gunpoint. You want a man who WANTS to be a husband and father. And since it’s pretty clear at this point, that this is not his desire, you’re going to move along. No hard feelings. Best of luck.
If he reconsiders, congratulations, you may have a husband. If he lets you go without a fight, it’s for the best.
Finally, for readers who may feel uneasy with my 3 year time frame before engagement, Nancy’s situation is different for one very important reason: she has a guy who has stated he DOESN’T want to get married. If she were with a guy who DID want to get married but wanted to be sure about HER, I’d tell her to give him six more months to come to a conclusion before leaving.
Your thoughts, below, are appreciated.

Why Men Routinely Hit on Women Who Are Not Interested
I’m always wary about sharing articles and videos, lest you think that my sharing it is a 100% endorsement of the ideas within them.
When I share something, there’s always a seed of an idea worth discussing. Which brings me to today’s video courtesy of New York Magazine, on a concept known as sexual misperception.
The point is that people shouldn’t take anything in dating too personally.
This is the very observable phenomenon in which men overestimate women’s interest in them. 90% of women have experienced a man who mistakes basic politeness for sexual signals. Yet studies show that this isn’t just a result of American frat-boy culture. In fact, people all over the world deal with the exact same misperception.
Like most things we discuss here on this blog, I find it more important to observe it and understand it than to judge it. As a woman, you may not like every guy who hits on you, but that doesn’t mean you should stop being polite. As a man, you may overestimate how many women are open to your advances, but that doesn’t mean you should be afraid to make a first move. The point is that people shouldn’t take anything in dating too personally. Don’t take it personally that a guy asks you out when you were just being nice. Don’t take it personally when she rejects you for asking her out.
Your comments, below, are always appreciated.

I May Not Be With My Long-Distance Partner for 8 More Years!
I’m 29 years old and my girlfriend of 5 years is 24. A year ago she moved away to further schooling in the medical field. She’s in the 2nd year of a 4-year program. The long distance has been tough but we’ve made it work thus far. She’s from the same town as me and her intention has always been to move back home once she’s finished. My work makes it completely unfeasible to move in the short term. She made the choice to pursue her dreams through school and I choose to pursue mine through a career and life at home and it’s worked out as planned so far. But there’s always been a knowledge that we would end up here together.
Recently she dropped some news on me that she’s considering a specialty in her field that would be an additional 3 years or possibly 4. There’s an outside chance the specialty could be served back home but odds are strongly against it. The kicker is that I know she is interested in this specialty for reasons outside of love for it. I won’t detail them all but family pressure, a big chip on her shoulder, and financial reasons are all at play.
I’m at odds with how I feel about this newfound bombshell. I want to spend my life with her. But my mind keeps telling me that spending 7-8 years of an 11-12 year relationship in a long distance setting simply isn’t feasible. Adding in the time for her to get situated in a job on her return, I just don’t see the avenue for us to work. I’ll be nearing 40 and she’ll be pushing 35. All our youth and time together would be gone and we’d immediately have to jump into starting a family that we’ve both already discussed. The hurdles seem too much to overcome and frankly they were not something we agreed to.
I feel like her choosing the additional long distance would be essentially choosing her career over love and family. She sees it as me not giving her unwavering support in her goals. My gut tells me that I need to have a frank discussion with her to let her know that once she finishes this round of schooling, building a family needs to come 1st and it needs to happen here. I’ve been blessed with a great job that can support us both while she chooses whatever path she pleases here at home while we live a life together. Am I wrong in approaching it this way?
Joe
Dear Joe,
I strive incredibly hard to provide objective, reality-based dating and relationship advice, but I have to admit to having my own biases.
One of them is that I’m anti-long-distance relationships and I wanted to own it before I explain further.
Now, to be fair, every relationship is unique, and many people have started long-distance relationships that ended up in marriage, including my own sister. So I don’t reflexively think that all long-distance relationships are bad, rather, that they introduce much higher degree of difficulty, when relationships are already tricky enough for most people.
In your situation, you met her when she was 19, and, by your own estimates, by the time you are together again full-time, you will be 36 or 37. So I don’t think it’s unfair of you to be skeptical about the strength of your relationship once she’s done with her internship and residency. In fact, it’s very wise.
I know that romantics will say that love should conquer all – if you love her, you’ll wait. I suppose if you believe that there’s just one “soulmate” out there for everybody, you can live your life like it. I don’t believe that, however, and it doesn’t sound like you do, either.
It doesn’t matter who is “right.” It only matters that neither of you is willing to make the necessary compromise to make things work over long-distance for the next 8 years.
You can love your girlfriend deeply (and, after 5 years, I’m sure you do), but if the choices she makes take her away from you, you have to consider your opportunity cost.
You’re giving up nearly a decade on the faith that life (and both of you) will be the exact same people when you get back together. That is, if anything, a big load of wishful thinking.
If your girlfriend doubts it, ask her to remember what she was like when she was 16. Now ask her if, in 8 years, she thinks she’s going to be the same person.
So yes, I think you have to have an adult conversation. Just be careful in how you frame it, lest it skew the direction of the conversation.
You already think she’s choosing work over you.
She already thinks you’re prioritizing your dreams over hers.
You’re both right. But that’s okay. These are the very decisions that determine if couples are compatible. It doesn’t matter who is “right.” It only matters that neither of you is willing to make the necessary compromise to make things work over long-distance for the next 8 years.
The good news is that you will both find new partners wherever you both shall land – and those relationships won’t require anyone to make a huge sacrifice he/she doesn’t want to make.

What Is the Average Age for Marriage?
I love big data.
Despite the media panic about the death of marriage, people are still getting married like nobody’s business. Statistics-based website, 538, plots out when people get married on a chart.
What do we see?
As of 2013, 4.6 percent of women and 4.3 percent of men 70 and older had never been married. Which is to say that over 95% of people HAVE been married.
At 35, 60% of men and women are married. For men, that number keeps going up. At 70, 74.5% of men are married. But for women, the pattern is different.
Take your love life seriously at a younger age instead of getting started when over 60% of the marriage-minded people are already off the market.
At age 48, 62.3 percent of women were wedded, and it goes down from there, likely due to a combination of divorce and death, not to mention because women tend to marry at a younger age, marry older men and live longer.
The median age that Americans got divorced from their first spouses is 32.0 years for men, 30.1 years for women, and got married for the second time is 35.8 years for men, 33.3 years for women.
Moral of the story, as always:
Don’t give up on marriage. It’s far from a dying institution.
Take your love life seriously at a younger age instead of getting started when over 60% of the marriage-minded people are already off the market.
It is, in fact, more difficult for older women to find good men, because 75% of men are married at age 70. Scarcity, indeed.
Your thoughts, below, are appreciated.

Is There An Appropriate Amount of Time I Should Wait to Date After My Divorce?
Last week I made the decision to end my 7-year marriage because of physical and emotional abuse. I feel like I’ve already been through those famous five stages of grief–denial with all the years I stayed in something unhealthy, bargaining was the last few years when I urged him to get counseling and tried to forgive him. Now I’m DONE. I actually feel a huge wave of relief and happiness and hope for a future of actual love and that I might someday find a guy who can be kind and compassionate the way I am and the way I deserve.
My question is this: How long is it necessary to wait before getting back into the dating scene? I should mention I have two small children and I don’t want to rush anything. I just want to ride this wave of optimism because I’ve never felt so confident and lovable before. What would you recommend?
I don’t have a strong attachment to any man in particular right now. I just really believe that love may be possible for me after all and I don’t want to quash any potential dates on the basis of some arbitrary rule.
Thank you so much,
Ann
Congratulations, Ann, on having the courage to leave a situation that was making you miserable. I must admit, I’ve never fully understood the psychology of abuse – and how people who are objectively treated poorly choose to remain in relationships – but I’m glad you’ve broken free.
You can do WHATEVER THE HELL YOU WANT right now.
More importantly, I’m glad that you’re feeling relieved, happy and optimistic about what happens next – that you’re looking forward to your new lease on life, rather than being paralyzed by fear like so many other victims of abuse.
Which is why I want to tell you in the kindest, most non-professional way possible, that you can do WHATEVER THE HELL YOU WANT right now.
Google “How long should I wait after divorce to start dating?”
You’ll get a whole bunch of opinions, but all that matters is you.
Sounds to me like your marriage was dying for years and that you’ve already mourned its death. Sounds to me like your head is on straight and, while you’re cautious about exposing your children to other men, you don’t want to have to wait until they’re teenagers.
If you’re riding the wave of self-love, get back out there and explore your dating options as a single mom.
So if you’re riding the wave of self-love, I couldn’t think of a more opportune time to get back out there and explore your dating options as a single mom.
And if you’re gonna do it, just make sure you’re prepared, and you’ll have an incredible time meeting the kind of guy who will appreciate you for all that you are.

The Power (and the Blind Spot) of Emotions
As a proud Duke alum, I actually look forward to getting the quarterly alumni magazine. Yes, I was featured there once before (many moons ago), but I find it far more stimulating to read about other Duke grads who are changing our world for the better.
Here’s an except from a recent issue, which describes how we can use our rational brain when it comes to dating and relationships.
Scott Huettel writes, “For many decisions, trying to reason through to an optimal outcome is actually counterproductive; that is, people make worse decisions when reasoning about costs and benefits than when using simple rules, or what researchers call “heuristics. Four decades of research by psychologists and behavioral economists on heuristics has produced evidence supporting this claim. Heuristics are, in lay terms, shortcuts used in decision-making; phrases such as “choose what’s most familiar” or “stop searching when you find something good enough.” They use very limited information, tend to be very simple and fast, and often work better than complex reasoning.
Knowing when to use a heuristic and when to use reasoning isn’t always obvious. The most general rule—itself a heuristic!—is that reasoning works best for decisions that involve abstract, impersonal, and one-time choices, like retirement planning. Heuristics tend to work best for decisions that involve tangible personal outcomes with which you have considerable experience.”
You may not always know that a guy is RIGHT for you, but you can trust your gut (heuristics!) to know if he’s WRONG for you.
This is why I say that you should use your rational AND emotional brain in decision making. And why it’s more important to trust how it feels than how it looks to others or whether it matches up with your checklist. It also explains why “Believe the Negatives/Ignore the Positives” and “good relationships don’t make you anxious” are valuable concepts. You may not always know that a guy is RIGHT for you, but you can trust your gut (heuristics!) to know if he’s WRONG for you.
Mark Leary writes, “Emotions are, at heart, functional (and we could not survive if we lost our capacity to experience them). But two features of emotions can be maladaptive. Emotions can override rational considerations of how we should respond and lead us to behave in ways that work against our best interests. Angry outbursts, fearful inhibitions, jealous rages, or desperate actions seem at times impossible to control, as if we have been possessed by a powerful demon we are powerless to oppose.
In addition, emotions sometimes arise from our own thoughts even when nothing is objectively wrong at the moment. How many of us have tied ourselves into knots of anxiety while lying safe-and-sound in our beds, worrying about things that might never come to pass? When we work ourselves into strong emotional states through self-thought, we suffer unnecessarily at our own hands.
It’s not that emotions are bad; it’s that it can be detrimental to be blindly guided by emotion and to assume that because you feel something that it’s either “right” or “real”. Often, it’s neither.
Although few of us are masters of all of our emotions, some people manage their emotional life more successfully than others. Recognizing that emotions must sometimes be ignored and must often be controlled is the first step. Not all emotional reactions are rational or in one’s best interests, so intelligent living requires us to manage our emotions.”
So if I ever sound too “rational” or like I’m playing devil’s advocate on behalf of men, this is why. Emotions cloud our judgment and are more subjective than objective. When you assume the worst in men and dating, it’s coming from an emotional place and you end up with these type of cognitive distortions. It’s not that emotions are bad; it’s that it can be detrimental to be blindly guided by emotion and to assume that because you feel something that it’s either “right” or “real”.
Often, it’s neither.
Your thoughts, below, are appreciated.
