I Found The Man of My Dreams Except For One Thing – He Smokes. What Should I do?

I Found The Man of My Dreams Except For One Thing โ€“ He Smokes

Hi Evan, I’ve been reading your blogs and following all your advice. After several failed relationships, I finally found someone who is all the things you say that a real man should be. The only problem is that he smokes. I am a non-smoker and have never dated a smoker in the past, but I am in my mid 30’s and ready for marriage. He is too, but his smoking is the only issue we keep arguing about. He says he is trying to kick the habit for me, but he has failed to do so and it seems he smokes even more after each failed attempt. The other day he told me that he has already started looking for a house for us and that he plans to marry me next year and wants to start a family a year later. He has been working overtime at his job to make this happen and every month he shows me his bank statement. I’ve been ready for marriage for over a decade and over the past 5 years, I have been reading self-help dating books and blogs such as yours, actively making changes to better myself and attract better quality men. After doing all that, I finally found the man of my dreams who wants everything I want – except he’s a smoker. What should I do? By the way, he is 38 years and I’m 35. Your advice is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Gia

Glad to hear that your self-help has been self-helping you to attract better quality men. I’m sympathetic to your dilemma, as I’m sure most non-smokers are as well.

But as I’ve said hundreds of times before, whatever you call a dealbreaker is a dealbreaker. The more dealbreakers you have, the fewer relationship options you have.

Here are some common dealbreakers for my clients:

Makes $150K – 5%
Over 6 feet tall – 14%
Has a bachelors degree – 32%
Has advanced degree – 11%
Is Jewish – 1.7%
Doesn’t watch porn regularly – 33%

And so on, and so forth.

The more dealbreakers you have, the fewer relationship options you have.

This says nothing about looks or humor or kindness or generosity or emotional intelligence or communication or the desire to commit – you know, the things that actually determine whether you’ll have a happy marriage. Yet good luck asking a woman to compromise on any one of these things that she deems important. If you choose to deem them all important, your dating pool shrinks considerably.

That’s not my opinion. That’s math.

You want a guy who doesn’t smoke? That’s fine. Only about 20% of men smoke, leaving you 80% to choose from.

I know I’ve reduced an emotional decision to an exercise in statistics, but that’s largely because I’ve never seen a good way to issue an emotional argument to an emotional question. We can run down the reasons you object to him smoking – he’ll shorten his lifespan, he’ll taste like cigarettes, his clothes will smell, it’s disgusting, etc., but none of those things are subject to change as long as he smokes.

So this really comes down to something quite simple:

Presuming he smokes for the rest of his life, can you be happy with him? Or would you be happier without him – breaking up with him at this very moment to find a guy JUST like him… without that awful smoking habit?

You want a guy who doesn’t smoke? That’s fine. Only about 20% of men smoke, leaving you 80% to choose from.

I’m not telling you the answer; I’m outlining your two choices.

And lest you think I’m being glib about it, I went through very much the same calculus in 2008 when I was debating whether to propose to my wife. Best relationship I’d ever had by far, but part of me thought, “Weeellll…maybe I can find someone just like her, but five years younger and Jewish (instead of three years older and Catholic).” When I thought of how hard it was to find this awesome relationship, it became clear to me that I should stick with what I had instead of tempting the fates, spending three years looking for someone “more like me”, who will undoubtedly have ANOTHER set of flaws that I couldn’t calculate.

But again, someone will dump the smoker. Someone will dump the guy who makes 75K. Someone will not give a chance to the 5’9” guy. They’re all entitled to their preferences.

At the same time, I’d venture to guess that those are the women whose relationship advice you may not want to follow.

3 Priceless Dating Tips To Attract the Right Men

3 Priceless Dating Tips To Attract the Right Men

Last night was a special event. Hundreds of women in the greater Los Angeles area took time out of their busy schedules to learn 3 Priceless Dating Tips That Will Repel the Wrong Men, Attract the Right Men and Make You Feel Infinitely Better Than You Do Today.

It was a banner event that included 5 answers about why it’s so hard to meet the right men, 3 priceless dating tips, an interview with a former client who’s gone through my program, and, finally, an invitation to join my “Be the CEO” Dating Bootcamp – Live From Los Angeles, which begins on Saturday, April 23rd and runs through Wednesday, May 18th.

Wait, what?!

There’s all this stuff going on that I didn’t even tell you about? That doesn’t sound cool. It’s like finding out that all of your friends were at a party to which you weren’t even invited.

So here’s my thinking:

First, this is something I’ve wanted to do for a long period of time – the ability to work with clients in person and create an intimate group of smart, strong, successful women going through a one-month program together. The problem with a one-month-program, of course, is that it virtually eliminates the possibility of anyone outside of Los Angeles joining. It really doesn’t make much sense to fly to LA every other Wednesday night, does it? I didn’t think so.

So this “Be the CEO” Dating Bootcamp – Live From Los Angeles – is ultimately a test run. I wanted to put together a thoughtful, personal, comprehensive event that offered the best in dating advice, personal attention, and fun. I’ve already had a bunch of women sign up right after the initial teleseminar and am excited to get the group started in a few weeks.

Presuming all goes well, I’ll figure out how to run this bootcamp in other big cities – maybe even with your help! But first things first, I’m looking for 10 smart women in LA who are ready for big change.

What about that free 3 Priceless Dating Tips teleseminar? Why didn’t I tell you about that previously? Again, it had to do with getting 10 women from LA registered right away. It’s not that you don’t stand to benefit from the same dating tips, but rather that the point of the teleseminar was to inspire Los Angeles women to take action and become the CEO of their love lives. It doesn’t make as much sense if you have to fly from New York to LA once a week for four weeks

But since I’m a sucker – and you know I like teaching you as much as I can – I took the liberty to record this event and will replay it for you, for free.

When I ask you to embody your CEO energy, all I’m telling you to do is summon your greatest innermost confidence when it comes to dating.

Just click below to listen to a replay of my “3 Priceless Dating Tips That Will Repel the Wrong Men, Attract the Right Men and Make You Feel Infinitely Better Than You Do Today” and – if you are anywhere within driving distance of LA I’d love to see you in the “Be the CEO” Dating Bootcamp.

And if your first reaction is “Be the CEO?” “Bootcamp?” “That sounds very – um – masculine,” I completely get where you’re coming from. Maybe it sounds like the male dating coach is trying to put together some live-ass-kicking where he berates you into better dating behavior like a drill sergeant in an 80’s military movie.

Not quite.

As you may know, “Being the CEO” of your own love life is one of my central coaching themes. It doesn’t mean being difficult or bitchy or masculine or playing games. When I ask you to embody your CEO energy, all I’m telling you to do is summon your greatest innermost confidence when it comes to dating.

If you are the CEO of your own small company with great perks, long-term benefits, and potential tenure, you can begin to see each new man is just an intern applying for a job with you. That gives you all the power. Since there’s only one job opening available, you’re going to be pretty selective about who gets that one coveted internship.

As a CEO, you don’t spend any time worrying about what the intern thinks, because it doesn’t matter. YOU’RE the boss. YOU determine whether he gets hired. His future at your company is up to YOU and depends entirely on his EFFORTS. If he has a great resume, but doesn’t do the consistent work to get (and maintain) a long-term position, you fire him and bring in another intern.

The intern who wants the job most may not be the one with the best resume; he’ll be the one who is willing to work for it. He shows up early. He stays late. He really, really wants the job. If he doesn’t earn the position of boyfriend, you let him go with no fanfare. If no interns are currently impressing, the job remains open indefinitely until you find the right fit for this prestigious one-of-a-kind position. Better to have no intern than a bad intern who disappoints you on a daily basis.

The CEO metaphor is the best example I’ve got for how to date successfully – especially in Los Angeles – land of insecurity, social climbers, dreamers, and flakes.

When you’re the CEO, you don’t have to chase down some guy because he runs a Silicon Beach startup or is the executive producer of his own cable show. You just sit back, observe his efforts and treat him the same as you’d treat any other person in the entire world – with kindness, humor and compassion.

No fear, no wariness. Just show him why he’d be smart to get in on the ground floor of your company and pay attention to how seriously he’s taking this job.

That’s how easy it can be – if you learn how to feel like a CEO from the inside out.

In less than a month, I’m going to take you from where you are now – confused, frustrated, and a little jaded – and turn you into a man magnet and dating machine.

• Soon, you will get over the pain in your past, embrace the present and date with inner confidence to attract the best men.

• Soon, you will crush the fear and inertia that have been holding you back from putting yourself out there in an authentic and vulnerable way.

• Soon, you will have quality men lining up to take you out on thoughtful, generous weekend dates.

• Soon, you will know exactly how to best handle the check, the good night kiss, the after-date text, what men think about sex, and the optimal method for dating multiple men at once.

• Soon, you will be the CEO of your love life, and systematically reject any immature, narcissistic, flaky, damaged, selfish male intern who doesn’t make an effort or doesn’t want to commit.

By the time you are done with my “Be the CEO” Dating Bootcamp, you will either have a boyfriend or know how to get a boyfriend – without the anxiety, fear, sadness, drama and confusion you usually associate with dating.

I hope that sounds good to you, because I do not make promises I can’t keep.

This is my most powerful dating material – previously only available in Love U – and, for the first time, I’m doing it LIVE from Los Angeles.

The fact is – as much as I believe in eBooks, video courses, and recorded phone calls, there is no substitute for the in-person experience.

Just like the difference between talking to a man on the phone and meeting him for a date, when you and I get together in person, there’s an entirely different chemistry.

Fun. Emotion. Anticipation. Joy. Surprise. Laughter. And yes, probably a few tears as well.

If you’ve read my blogs, newsletters and eBooks, believe me, there is no comparison with how different this material will feel in real life.

In less than a month, I’m going to take you from where you are now – confused, frustrated, and a little jaded – and turn you into a man magnet and dating machine.

Doing powerful dating exercises. Telling funny dating stories. Practicing flirting. Making intimate friends. Being vulnerable. Feeling excited and empowered. Eating and drinking heavily, courtesy of yours truly.

If the idea of making a close bunch of single girlfriends in LA, spending 15 hours with over lunch, dinner and drinks, and reinventing how you approach dating in LA sounds appealing to you, click here to learn more about “Be the CEO” Dating Bootcamp.

Those who sign up right now will get 4 bonus hours of audio coaching worth nearly $400 on topics including Insecurity, Courtship, Online Dating Profiles and Bad Behavior vs. Misunderstood Behavior.

That’s a LOT of value to help supplement your Bootcamp education.

Remember, I am only taking TEN women from all of Los Angeles, first come, first served.

Based on the early feedback I’ve gotten, that may mean that if you don’t register now, you may not be able to register tomorrow.

Sorry about that, but that’s what happens when you restrict a program for smart, motivated women to only ten people – you get the best of the best up front.

Thanks so much for your time today.

I can’t wait to meet you in person and finally show you the path to lasting love!

Warmest wishes, your friend,

Evan

P.S. You know what I did when I needed to make a change? I created this bootcamp.

Now it’s your turn to take bold action to get happy.

My “Be the CEO” Dating Bootcamp starts on Saturday, April 23rd, don’t miss out.

How Do You View Marriage?

How Do You View Marriage

My favorite New York Times philosopher, David Brooks, was at it again, breaking down people’s views of marriage into three separate categories.

First, is the psychological view of marriage.

The psychologists want you to think analytically as well as romantically about whom to marry. Pay attention to traits. As Ty Tashiro wrote in “The Science of Happily Ever After,” you want to marry someone who scores high in “agreeableness,” someone who has a high concern for social harmony, who is good at empathy, who is nice. You want to avoid people who score high in neuroticism — who are emotionally unstable or prone to anger.

Don’t think negative traits will change over time, Tashiro wrote, because they are constant across a lifetime. Don’t focus on irrelevant factors, like looks. Don’t filter out or rationalize away negative information about a partner or relationship.

Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and fortunate accident.

Second is the romantic view.

Their logic is that you need a few years of passionate love to fuse you together so you’ll stay together when times get hard. It’s a process beautifully described by a character in Louis de Berniรจres’s novel “Corelli’s Mandolin”:

“Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it. We had roots that grew toward each other underground, and when all the pretty blossoms had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two.”

Finally, Brooks brings up a moral view of marriage – an institution that is designed to make us better people:

The everyday tasks of marriage are opportunities to cultivate a more selfless love. Everyday there’s a chance to inspire and encourage your partner to become his or her best self. In this lens, marriage isn’t about two individuals trying to satisfy their own needs; it’s a partnership of mutual self-giving for the purpose of moral growth and to make their corner of the world a little better.

I think this is pretty astute and that these categories are not mutually exclusive but, in fact, highly overlapping.

Passion won’t save you if your partner is selfish or a bad communicator or untrustworthy, so better to seek out high character partners than to be driven by lust and hope that your lustful decision also happens to be a good person, too.

For most people, the romantic love comes first. If you felt that passion in the first few years, you’re willing to fight hard for the relationship when it inevitably fades away. I think this has a basis in truth, but I often caution people against making this romantic passion a prerequisite. The point being that you eventually end up in the same place in 10 years or 40 years, so why do the first two years have to be filled with butterflies to be successful?

Predictably, I take the psychologist’s view when it comes to giving relationship advice. Passion won’t save you if your partner is selfish or a bad communicator or untrustworthy, so better to seek out high character partners than to be driven by lust and hope that your lustful decision also happens to be a good person, too.

As for Brooks’ final view of marriage – the moral one – I think he’s absolutely right: marriage DOES make you a better person. It does present you with your own flaws every day. It does force you to be kinder, more selfless, more self-aware, more compromising. However, I think that’s only the byproduct of being a spouse; I don’t think people go into marriage to learn how to be the best version of themselves.

Check out Brooks’ piece and let me know which view of marriage hews closest to your own.

Your thoughts, as always, are appreciated.

The Difference Between Having Needs and Being Needy

The Difference Between Having Needs and Being Needy

“You’re only as needy as your unmet needs” is a really affirming quote, because it implies that if you feel needy, your partner has been neglecting your needs. The problem is that this is not always the case. Insecure people with anxious attachment styles often think that every disagreement is potential cause for a break-up. It’s not. If you have a good man who loves you, you can breathe easy and be vulnerable and trusting, without fear of him leaving. But, as you’ll hear in this podcast, it’s all up to you.

Does Dating a Divorced Dad Change My Commitment Timeline?

Does Dating a Divorced Dad Change My Commitment Timeline

Thank you for all of your clear and concise thoughts over the last few years. I have definitely taken things to heart: look for boyfriend behavior; there is a natural timeline where commitment should come by month three, “I love you” around 6 months, living together at 18, engaged at 2-3 years; men do what they want, and so many other pearls.

Where I am stuck, is that this advice seems to be geared towards men who are childless and never divorced. I can’t help but wonder if any of these things change if a woman is dating a divorced dad.

I have been dating a wonderful man for about four months now. We’ve known each other almost 20 years prior to dating, and the transition to an amorous relationship was easy and natural. He’s a fantastic and committed single dad who has his 5-year-old son 50% of the time; he and his ex-divorced several years ago. She has struggled with addiction, thus making co-parenting a bit of a struggle at times. I can’t help but feel like her loss is my gain. He’s truly wonderful; he’s kind, thoughtful, treats me with so much respect. We talk daily (if he has his son it’s usually by text, otherwise we chat by phone in the evenings), he makes it a point to see me once a week and we always have so much fun together. When we are together things are easy and fun, just as they should be! He is great at communicating his feelings to me, and although we’ve never had the “relationship talk” I’ve never felt the need to have it because he shows all the signs of a great boyfriend.

However, we’re at the four month mark, and I’m starting to get a bit antsy and curious about a few things. First of all, I want more time with him (more than once a week); I understand that he wants to be very cautious about bringing people into his son’s life, and that means there’s less time for he and I to spend together. However, I want a serious relationship that is continuously growing. I want a boyfriend that is able to invest in a serious relationship with me. I think he wants that too, but I don’t know if 4 months is too early to expect that of him because he needs to move slower than a childless man. So, is that timeline trajectory applicable to dating a single father or should it be tweaked?

Overall, he’s wonderful. He shares intimate details of his life, he’s a great communicator and makes me feel really cared for. I feel safe and happy with him; when we’re together it feels like I’ve come home. I have learned so much about what it means to be in a giving relationship in these four months, and he has been such a remarkable teacher of that. But, I want more at this point, and I don’t know if it’s a simple case of needing to be more patient to let things grow organically….or if I just need to see things as they are and say that my needs aren’t being met and re-evaluate. I would love your thoughts on this. You always shoot straight from the hip!

Thanks so much,
Anne

Thanks for the kind words, Anne. Glad to hear you’ve found yourself in a relationship with a wonderful man. I think it’s always instructive for women to hear from other women that, despite all the frustrations you’ve had with dating and relationships prior to today, you don’t believe that “men” are the problem, and that, in fact, in this one instance, your boyfriend’s ex-wife was the weak link. This is far more common than we see here – specifically because most of the questions I post are from women complaining about men. On a blog catered towards men, you’d hear a lot more about selfish, volatile, emotionally unstable or unavailable women. But that’s another story for another day.

I’m glad you asked this question, however, because it’s extremely common – and I’ve been dealing with it regularly in my Love U Community, which is filled with fortysomething single moms. And while I may not have written explicitly about this before, and may not have it as a core part of my curriculum, what I’m about to share with you is 100% consistent with other things I’ve said over the years.

While you couldn’t possibly know if you have what it takes to last 40 years as a couple, you should know if he wants more than this.

1. Make sure that your boyfriend wants to get married. This isn’t about whether he wants to marry you; that information will take a few years to suss out. But you should both pay attention to his profile (which plainly states his intentions) and pay attention to his words. In short, men who like fantasy football talk about fantasy football. And men (and women) who want to get married generally talk about getting married. You shouldn’t have to worry. You shouldn’t have to pry. The big thing is to know that you’re in a long-term relationship with someone who also sees the end game as marriage. If you do not know this, then ask him. His answer will dictate what happens next. In your particular case, while you couldn’t possibly know if you have what it takes to last 40 years as a couple, you should know if he wants more than this.
2. Single parents – with jobs, multiple kids, shared custody and unreliable exes – are often doing the best that they can…but that does not mean that their best is good enough for you. I think these relationships work best when two individuals have supportive exes and can coordinate their weeks/weekends/schedules to see each other frequently. Otherwise, you’re right: all the best communication skills and purest intentions in the world don’t change the fact that you have a once a week guy on your hands.

You’re a couple looking for a solution and a good boyfriend wants to make his girlfriend happy.

3. You need to have an adult conversation. It’s not fear-based. It’s not an ultimatum. It’s not anything deeper than “what do you want for dinner?” You have a question. You need an answer. You have two separate questions: First, “do you ever want to get married again?” If he says yes, then go to the follow-up: “I appreciate the demands on your schedule, but I love you and would love to know how to get more quality time with you. I know you make the best effort you can via text, I know you don’t want to integrate me with your child, however it’s hard to feel like our relationship is escalating when we only see each other once a week. What do you think?” It may be a tough question, but you’re not attacking him or making him wrong. You’re a couple looking for a solution and a good boyfriend wants to make his girlfriend happy.

I can’t tell you what will happen, but I can assure you that there are millions of single moms and dads navigating this space with worse relationship partners. I can also assure you that there are millions more who have found a way to make things work in a second marriage, so if this guy can’t give you what you need, don’t be afraid of looking elsewhere for a man who can.

Please come back and let us know what transpires, okay?
