Women Arent As Cool With One-Night Stands As Men

Lets start with one thing..Just like every study ever conducted, just because this doesnt apply to YOU doesnt mean it doesnt apply.

My Boyfriend Is Turned Off By My Hairy Legs.

Im 25 and have been dating a man who is 34 for the last 1.5 years. There is a lot to like about him he's smart, kind, caring, and dependable. He is almost the elusive alpha male nerd.

Am I Being Too Materialistic By Giving Up on a Financially Unstable Man?

I decided to get back into the dating world and I met this guy online four weeks ago. So its all still very early and very new. But a big worry for me is that is has absolutely no stability or consistency in his life.

When Do I Draw The Line When He Parties With the Boys?

My boyfriend loves partying weekends and some weeknights with his friends. We are in our late 20s and I party a bit too but dont consider it extremely important.

Is Marrying In Your 20’s Smarter than Marrying in Your 30’s?

Is Marrying In Your 20's Smarter than Marrying in Your 30's

Evidently, when you’re a dating coach, everyone wants you to see the latest tragedy, so as a result, this article has already been forwarded to me a few times.

A new study states that you have a greater likelihood of divorcing if you marry in your mid-30s than if you marry in your late 20’s. The conclusion, of course: Get married right away! Your clock is ticking! Soon, there will be no men left! Panic! Panic! Panic!

I’m generally not one to question the veracity of studies – as a non-scientist, it would be like a politician questioning the merits of climate change – but something about this study rubs me the wrong way, in that it’s essentially trying to grab headlines.

Get married right away! Your clock is ticking! Soon, there will be no men left! Panic! Panic! Panic!

Dive a little deeper, and here’s what you see:

“Looking at the raw divorce rates, for instance, Wolfinger found that people who married at age 35 or greater had a 19 percent risk of divorce, compared to a 20 percent risk for those aged 20 to 24, and a 32 percent risk for those who married before they were 20.”

Dive even deeper, by going to Wolfinger’s website and you’ll see that this study covers the divorce risk only for “first marriages within the first five years of marriage.”

In other words, it doesn’t describe the seven year itch that may occur for a 28-year-old who married too soon and is trapped in bad relationship. It doesn’t describe my wife who remarried at age 38 after a failed first marriage and likes to think she made a good decision the second time around. Which is to say that, while it’s a splashy idea that marrying younger is “better” than marrying older, I think there are far too many variables that contradict such a simple narrative.

While it’s a splashy idea that marrying younger is “better” than marrying older, there are far too many variables that contradict such a simple narrative.

Don’t trust my experience: trust your own.

At what point in your life did you feel most capable of making smart, healthy, long-term decisions? Age 27? Or whatever age you’re at now?

The defense rests, your honor.

Your thoughts, below, are always appreciated.

The Means to a Mend

No one likes to fall in love and it end in a deficit. Few people would ever choose to drown in love. However, in this life, struggling through to find the ONE…sometimes it’s hard not to let love in. Sometimes the ocean of love does enter us, and seeps into our hearts. Like the weight of water it can break and shatter our hearts when it enters. This feeling is what happens when you let someone or everything in. You get that feeling when you fall in love hard and seek your all and end all to be filled by SHE/HE. When it comes to love I have heard it is better to walk into love versus falling in love because, when it’s not right you can simply walk out. If you fall in love you run the risk of staying down too long, and not knowing when or how to come back up for air. Not knowing what or who to hold on to. So therefore you are left to drown in love.

Once you allow your heart to take over. You will feel yourself literally sink to the depths, the brinks of what seems to be no return, an abyss! Entrapped by your emotions, you may possibly even feel broken. You can even feel as though you are in complete darkness where no light can be seen. Although dim or dark know that this too shall pass. The pain you are feeling is not the end all, no chance for a great relationship ever synopsis. Remember, just as that darkness of the night always precedes the dawn, know that if you are going through a dark period light and blissful love is sure to follow. As long as you have breath in your body and your heart still beats a beat, know that you will heal and move on, even if it is inconceivable. This is not the end of you but, perhaps an end of what was not meant to be. Know that the depth of that emotional abyss is not the final resting spot on your love journey. Sometimes you have to reach your lowest point, that point where you are faced without a choice but, to move on and rise above all the bullshit! You can choose to stay at the bottom, until you simply drown, or you can gather the pearls and leave behind the pebbles and the swine. It is these very pearls that will make you stronger, more resilient and help you see your worth.

Have faith that you can rise up, and replace the darkness with the light. Transform your weakness and pain into your greatest strength, and to a means of growth, renewal and redemption. Understand that sometimes transformation begins with a fall. So never regret the lesson. I read somewhere that “The ground is where humility lives”. This is when you must seek your inner strength, inner circle and faith to become more aware so that you gain the needed endurance to move on. It is on your way back up that you come back from having seen your own nothingness and seek the hunger for greatness. Know that if you have seen that reality, you have seen much. For the one who is truly deceived and in darkness is the one who only seeks to pleasure her/his own self. While simply disregarding others along the way. Deprived is the one who has never witnessed her/his own need for the genuine love of another. Reliant on her/his own self, SHE/HE fails to realize the weight of their actions and how it may compromise others, and everything else in existence.

Look to your faith and your inner strength to bring you back up, for when the heart that you thought was forever damaged will be mended. What was shattered will be whole again. Know that only your belief in the ability that you can will allow you to do this. Seek your inner strength. Constantly thinking and trying to figure what went wrong will only leave you to spend too much time regretting, feeling ashamed, broken and crippled with fear to love again. Don’t let the crushing waves of heartbreak prevent you from rising up. You can still rise up and breathe new air, new life for new love can be just around the corner. Regain your sense of self and get back on the love track. Leave the pain behind you and don’t let the pain change you. You have a heart that is beautiful, lovable and desirable for the right person. Keep these words dear and near and use it as your means to a mend.

I Have a Great Relationship But Long for A Deeper Commitment. Should I Be Satisfied With What I Have?

I Have a Great Relationship But Long for A Deeper Commitment

I’ve been dating my boyfriend for 3 years. I am a divorced mother of two and he never married and has no children. When we met, he told me that he’d always dreamed of having a wife and children and being a father. He said it was his ex who didn’t want children, and his concern over the stability of the relationship that prevented him from proposing marriage. He was keen to meet my twins, as well as to introduce me to his friends and family. He took me to a friend’s wedding after only dating me 3 weeks. He told me he loved me (by accident – it slipped out) after dating me only 2 weeks!

He is fully committed in the sense that we have been exclusive from the start, he is honest, loving, straightforward and kind. He spends three evenings a week at my house, sleeps over twice a week and spends most Sundays with us. We now work in offices that are close to each other, so he joins me nearly every lunch hour for my daily walk.

However, that is the extent of our commitment. We do not live together despite talking about it for three years. His house requires extensive renovations in order to be prepared for a sale, but although he could afford to pay a contractor he prefers to do these things himself and has thus far not accomplished much. He is very cheap and money is a big issue for him when it comes to moving in together. He wants everything separate to protect his assets legally and he wants to pay for everything separately including food, even after we have moved in together as he feels he should not be paying for anyone other than himself. He’s no more wealthy than I and we earn equivalent salaries.

He also has a pet parrot that I am terrified of. I have told him how frightened I am of the bird, and that it frightens me to have it in the house with children. He won’t get rid of the bird. He feels I am asking him to give up his dream, to give up the things he enjoys. I believe that means the dream of living together as a family with me and the boys is not as valuable a dream to him…and that hurts me so deeply. To lose out to a bird….

I know that if a friend asked my advice in this situation I’d tell her she should walk away but it’s never that simple when it’s yourself. He is a good man and my kids adore him. He’s the only father figure they’ve ever known (their real father left when they were 5 months old and wanted no custody). I’m 42, I dated for 4 years after my divorce and I know there are not a lot of good men out there. He and I rarely fight, he’s dependable, reliable, and hardworking. He’s never mean. He’s never violent. He’d never steal from me or lie to me or intentionally hurt me. He does love me. He never flirts or shows any interest in other women. He tells me I’m beautiful every day. He’s affectionate. He’s respectful. He comes from a good family and has a good job. Commitment issues aside, my only complaint about him is his cheapness. We could carry on as we are forever, if it weren’t for my longing for a deeper commitment. Should I be satisfied with what we have?

Thanks,
Lorna

Dear Lorna,

You contradict yourself so quickly it makes my head spin.

The fact that you can you extol the virtues of your boyfriend for 200 words and, in the same paragraph, write that you’d tell a friend with a similar man to walk away means that you are really confused right now. So let’s sort a few things out together, shall we?

If you can make peace with the parrot and the cheapness, then you should ask him a straightforward question: “Do you have any intention of proposing to me?”

You have a great man and a great relationship.

There are three issues here:

1. He has a parrot that you don’t like. Let’s do a thought experiment. Man tells woman that she should get rid of her cat on his behalf. How do you think that’s gonna fly? You’re not wrong for hating parrots. You’re wrong in thinking that it’s your right to tell him what pets he’s allowed to have. If you choose to make the parrot a dealbreaker, it’s a dealbreaker. I would think that would be one of the stranger causes for a breakup, but, then, who am I to judge?

2. He’s cheap. Not an attractive quality. You’re not going to singlehandedly change his relationship with money. But have you had a measured and adult conversation with him? Not one where you attack him as cheap, but one where you attempt to understand what he’s thinking and how he got this way? Have you attempted to explain not how “wrong” he is, but how his penurious ways make you feel? How it’s very clear that you’re not with him for his money, but his refusal to share with you has an unintended effect of making you feel bad – even though you know how deeply he loves you? Perhaps you can hold up the mirror to him so he can see himself clearly. It would be like you saying you loved him, being the perfect girlfriend, and never wanting to have sex. It’s not your intention to hurt him, but a reasonable boyfriend might feel bad about not feeling desired. Again, you’re not going to turn him into a completely different man, but you may get some motion from him on how he views money. And, strangely, like the parrot thing, it’s up to you to decide if being cheap overrides his long list of great boyfriend qualities. My wife is slow. I’m critical. We all have flaws. Happily married couples learn to accept and work around them as best they can.

3. The marriage thing, strangely, might be the easiest to resolve. If you can make peace with the parrot and the cheapness, then you should ask him a straightforward question: “Do you have any intention of proposing to me?” And then listen to his answer.

If he has no intention of marrying you – and you want to get married – the relationship is over.

If he has the intention of marrying you, but has an excuse, listen to it and determine if it’s valid.

If it’s not valid, you walk.

You’re the CEO here. If you don’t like how the intern is performing, you fire him.

If it is valid, give him time to buy a ring, renovate his house, take care of business – within limits. Tell yourself that if you don’t get a proposal in the next 6-12 months (or whatever), you’re out the door.

Point is: you’re the CEO here. If you don’t like how the intern is performing, you fire him.

But before you do, maybe you should do an open performance review. Seems you’ve done everything right except for having a heart-to-heart conversation with the man you love about your feelings.

More Sex Doesn’t Equal More Happiness

More Sex Doesn't Equal More HappinessSex makes people happy. And why not? It’s fun. It’s intimate. It’s not terribly time-consuming or expensive. It’s something you share with someone else.

You may conclude, therefore, that if you like sex then the more sex you have, the happier you’ll be.

Sex makes people happy. And why not? It’s fun. It’s intimate.

Except that’s not how it works.

No more than you’d be happier eating a steak at every meal just because you like steak, having more sex isn’t nearly as important as having quality sex.

Per the New York Times:

“For this study, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and elsewhere recruited 64 adult couples, all married and heterosexual, and asked the volunteers how often they had sex, how enjoyable it was and how happy they were in general, based on standard questionnaires that measure mood and energy. Half the couples, picked randomly, were assigned to go about their lives as usual; the rest were told to double the frequency of sexual relations. If they had sex once a month (the minimum rate for inclusion in the study), make it twice; couples who had sex three times a week (the maximum rate for participants) were to go to six.”

Turns out that this did not make them happier.

“In fact, their well-being declined, especially in measures of energy and enthusiasm, as did the quality of the sex. Both men and women reported that the additional intercourse wasn’t much fun.”

Good sex is about mutual enjoyment, not merely frequency.

The researchers were surprised, but I wasn’t. The only time in my life when I didn’t enjoy sex was when I was being told (by biology) that I had to do it to conceive children. “C’mon, Evan, we only have two fertile days this month as tracked by my ovulation kit, so get it up and let’s make this thing happen!”  Yeah, that’s not exactly the dirty talk that gets me going.

As a proud once-a-week guy (which, believe it or not, is evidently more than most of my married friends with toddlers), I can vouch for the idea that good sex is about mutual enjoyment, not merely frequency. Is it fun when I’m feeling extra randy and we go twice a week? Sure. But I wouldn’t want to be coerced into doing so.

Your thoughts, below, are always appreciated.

My Insecure Boyfriend Is Trying to Scare Me Off of All Men Besides Him

My Insecure Boyfriend Is Trying to Scare Me Off of All Men Besides Him

Hello Evan,

I have kind of an unusual question, and I was hoping to get your take on it. I’ve been dating my boyfriend for three months now, and there are lots of things I like about him. He’s really smart, and makes me laugh, and we both have the same values. However, he regularly tells me how sorry he feels for single women in general, and talks about how particularly sorry he is for women in San Francisco (where we live). He constantly talks about how other men are such jerks and players, and how he feels so much pity for his women friends, for his female boss and co-workers, and for all the women he dated before me. It is starting to make me uncomfortable.

A little background, I’m 30 and just moved home to San Francisco from New York City about 8 months ago. Sure, like any big city, San Francisco has its share of flaky dudes, or men too busy for a relationship. But there are lots of smart, interesting guys here, and there are actually more straight men than women because of the tech companies. Compared to NYC, San Francisco seems like a square deal. A lot of my guy friends who work in tech here complain about how hard it is to meet women.

I’ve tried to tell my boyfriend that dating here (and anywhere) is challenging for both sexes, and it’s probably best to have a little empathy for everyone. But he doesn’t seem to want to drop the issue. I’ve asked if this is some kind of strange sales pitch, and asked why he brings it up so much, but he just insists he’s just a nice guy who feels really sorry for women. I can’t tell if this is genuine concern, or it’s some kind of weird high-pressure commitment tactic. It usually comes up when I’m busy or he’s annoyed about something, so it seems like the latter. But there’s no need to pressure me – I’m already committed to him! And anyway, wouldn’t it be best for everyone if I date him because I like him, not because he’s managed to scare me away from the dating scene?

One last thing – my boyfriend is completely bald. I think he’s cute, but not every woman loves bald men. I feel like if I talked about bald men the way he talks about women, he’d probably get uncomfortable too. Part of me wants to turn the tables and say things like “I feel so sorry for bald men – it must be so difficult for them to find love when women prefer hair.” But that just seems mean and unproductive!

Should I cut this guy loose and find someone who isn’t into scare tactics, or do I just assume the best in my boyfriend, and that he’s got some kind of misguided knight-in-shining-armor complex, and try to see the good in it?

Seeking the Bald, Honest, Truth,
Sarah

Every once in a while, I get a letter that I’ve never gotten before. Thanks for making my day, Sarah. Unfortunately, I don’t have all that much to add to your analysis.

He’s a nice guy who feels really sorry for women.
He’s insecure about being bald and a “nice guy” since many women don’t like both traits.
He’s trying to put himself on a pedestal as a paragon of virtue, thereby “scaring” you from the broader dating pool of Silicon Valley Tinder-ing D-Bags.

If I were you and I actually liked this guy (after all, he IS your boyfriend), I would put it to him straight.

I would bet that the answer is D) All of the above.

So if I were you and I actually liked this guy (after all, he IS your boyfriend), I would put it to him straight:

Please, take yes for an answer. I’m already your girlfriend. And every time you tell me that you feel sorry for women, it makes me feel really awkward, as if I told you “I feel sorry for bald men because women judge them unfairly. Aren’t you lucky you found me?” Then listen to his reaction. He will hopefully admit some level of insecurity and you can bond over getting past this hurdle. And if he doesn’t, and this annoys you that much, then, by all means, you have the right to find a guy who doesn’t see fit to remind you all the time that you’d be lost without him.

Oh, and for extra reading on the pathology of being the “nice guy,” pick up a copy of Dr. Robert Glover’s “No More Mr. Nice Guy.”
